SOUTH EUCLID -- When summer breezes again visit Greater Cleveland, Notre Dame College will be the home site for a second theater group.
To introduce the latest group, Mercury Summer Stock, to the campus and South Euclid, an open house will be held from 5-8 p.m. Dec. 11 in the Performing Arts Center of the Administration Building. Notre Dame College is located at 4545 College Road.
“Mercury Summer Stock is a very well known theater group in town,” said NDC Director of Theater and Assistant Professor of Theater and Communication Jacqi Loewy. “My dream is to have the campus become an artistic center during the summers and this will help make that happen.
“Our students will have the opportunity to work with the actors and serve as interns.”
Notre Dame College will also continue, for the third year in 2012, serving as the home of the Shakespeare Festival. The Shakespeare Festival performs outdoors while Mercury will perform inside.
Pierre Brault founded Mercury along with the company’s Managing Director Brian Marshall 14 years ago.
“Brian Marshall and I started it when we were in college,” Brault said. “Our first home was the Civic Building on Mayfield Road (in Cleveland Heights), in the Ensemble Theater.”
The Cleveland Playhouse building in Cleveland served as Mercury’s most recent home. The Cleveland Clinic bought the Playhouse building, which led to the move to Notre Dame College.
“The fit for us with Notre Dame is perfect,” Brault said.
Marshall is an adjunct professor at NDC.
At Notre Dame, Mercury will produce three musicals per summer, as well as one teen production. Mercury’s actor roster consists of professionals and amateurs.
“We are very excited to have Mercury Summer Stock as part of our community,” said Mayor Georgine Welo. “Having a theater company based at Notre Dame College adds to the ‘College Town for All Ages’ vibe we are working to create and offers our residents another option for enjoying professional theater right here in South Euclid.”
During the past summer, Mercury’s offerings included productions of the musicals “Dr. Dolittle,” “Grand Hotel” and “Showboat.”
At the open house, Mercury will unveil its productions for next summer. Also, it will offer event-only subscription deals, live entertainment, holiday treats for the family, children’s fun stations and more.
